English to Hindi voice translator

You speak English and the other person speaks Hindi. Open the translator, pick English for you and Hindi for them, and take turns: your English reaches them in Hindi, and what they say comes back to you in English.

Face-to-Face and Listen are free for up to 30 minutes a day. Sign in with a free Owaa account to use it.

How to use it

  1. 01

Open it with the pair chosen

The button above opens Face-to-Face with English for you and Hindi for the other person already selected. If you are not signed in, you are taken through sign-in and brought back.

  2. 02

    Take turns

One person speaks at a time. Wait until the translation finishes playing before you speak, because anything said while it plays is not heard.

  3. 03

    Hear each other

Each of you hears the other in your own language through the same device. Major pairs such as English with Chinese, Spanish or Japanese are strongest; for anything important, repeat the key detail back.

Hindi: varieties and dialects

Hindi is one of India’s official languages alongside English, but it is not the only language Indians speak: many people in the United States speak Punjabi, Gujarati, Tamil, Telugu, Bengali, Urdu or another language first. These pages are for Hindi only.

Spoken Hindi and Urdu are very close in everyday conversation, though they are written in different scripts. Indian English mixes freely with Hindi (“Hinglish”), so keep each sentence in one language.

Politeness and formality in a translated conversation

  • Hindi has three levels of “you”: तू (very familiar), तुम (familiar) and आप (respectful). Use आप with strangers, elders, officials and anyone you want to show respect.
  • Adding जी (-ji) after a name or title, as in “Sharma-ji”, is a common sign of respect.

Common situations with Hindi speakers

At the doctor

Describe symptoms one at a time and name medicines from the package, since brand names differ between India and the United States.

With a landlord

Confirm rent and due date aloud and ask for terms in writing. Say amounts in dollars, since many Indian speakers think in rupees.

At your child’s school

Ask staff to say the date and time slowly, and to spell the child’s name as it appears on records.

At the bank

Spell your name in English letters as it appears on your ID, because the same Hindi name can be written several ways in English.

What is the difference between Face-to-Face and Listen for Hindi?
Face-to-Face is two-way, for two people in the same room: each speaks their own language and hears the other in theirs. Listen is one-way: it translates a talk, a broadcast or a speaker into Hindi.
Does it work for Punjabi, Gujarati, Tamil or Urdu?
These pages are for Hindi only. Other Indian languages are separate languages; the app lists the languages it supports.
Does it understand Hinglish?
Mixing Hindi and English inside one sentence is hard for any translator. Keep each sentence in one language and keep it short.
Should I use आप or तुम?
Use आप (respectful) with people you do not know and with elders. Use तुम only if the other person does first.
